Running to End Witchcraft Accusations and Ritual Attacks

Miranda Forsyth takes up the challenge of a 10km fun run in Canberra to raise funds for INAWARA. Find out how you can contribute to the fundraising too.

It was a beautiful sunny morning in Canberra on Sunday 1st of November when I ran 10 kilometres in the Canberra Times Fun Run.  I do enjoy running, but I had decided to do this event as a personal challenge (10 kilometres is a bit outside my usual comfort zone!) and in order to raise funds to support the International Network Against Witchcraft Accusations and Ritual Attacks (INAWARA).

In particular, I wanted to raise funds to help Dr Leo Igwe, a leading Nigerian human rights advocate and tireless campaigner against witchcraft accusations and related violence, attend our international conference in Malawi this November.

Leo has spent decades challenging harmful beliefs, supporting victims and survivors, and advocating for change. His voice and experience are enormously valuable, particularly in bringing together researchers, activists and practitioners working to end these abuses.

I also wanted to raise awareness while doing the run, and so I had a T-shirt designed with what I think is a compelling message:

“Witches don’t kill. Witchcraft accusations do.”

Actually, quite a lot of people got in touch with me to ask where they can buy one of the T-shirts, so we may have started something . . .

The run is over, but the fundraising continues! If you’d like to support this cause, even a small contribution would be greatly appreciated:

Support the fundraiser: End Witchcraft Accusations and Ritual Attacks

Together, we can help amplify the voices of those working to end these harmful practices.
