05 May, 2025
We were honoured to have special guest Ms. Reem Alsalem, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls, speak with INAWARA on the human rights issues affecting women and girls in relation to accusations of sorcery or witchcraft. With decades of experience advocating for human rights, gender justice, and the protection of vulnerable communities, Ms. Alsalem brings unparalleled insights from her work with the UN, international NGOs, and academic institutions.
In this engaging session, Professor Miranda Forsyth begins the conversation with Ms. Asalem, asking questions to explore the complex issues surrounding violence and harm inflicted on individuals accused of sorcery or witchcraft, in particular how this affects women and girls. Drawing on her extensive background—from her pivotal work with the UNHCR and various UN agencies to her academic expertise in international relations and human rights law—Ms. Alsalem leads a critical dialogue on how deeply ingrained cultural practices, newly emerging forms of misogyny and legal systems can perpetuate violence against marginalised groups—and what can be done in response.
Please tune into the video below to listen to Ms. Alsalem as she shares her perspective on promoting justice, ending violence and safeguarding human dignity in the face of enduring stigmas - a truly thought-provoking discussion on how it is possible to change the narrative and inspire actionable solutions. Q&A from the audience follows.
