10 August - World Day Against Witch Hunts

Each year on 10 August, we mark the World Day Against Witch Hunts - a time to reflect on the urgent and growing human rights crisis involving harmful practices related to accusations of witchcraft and ritual attacks.

These practices, which have led to violence, stigmatisation, and even death, persist in more than 50 countries across the Global South and Global North. Over the past two decades, at least 20,000 people have been harmed or killed after being accused of witchcraft.

In line with the UN Resolution 47/8 Elimination of harmful practices related to accusations of witchcraft and ritual attacks, this day calls on all of us to eliminate these harmful practices, protect those at risk - including women, children, persons with disabilities and older persons - and uphold the dignity, safety and human rights of all individuals.
